Team STIHL timbersports training day at Saemeister

21 March is World Forestry Day. We celebrate it together at the Tartu STIHL representative centre Saemeister, where a training day of Team STIHL timber-sports athletes takes place. Professional timber-sports athletes will be present, showing all those interested how a competition-level chain change is done, the current world record for which is 8.38 seconds.

Special limbing logs used in competitions have also been brought in, on which the true cutting performance and cutting speed of the new fuel-injection STIHL MS500i chainsaws will be tested. Those interested can also try a timed chain change themselves, and a Stihl GTA26 cordless pruning saw will be raffled off among all the quick-fingered participants. Come and see the cool timber-sports show and get to know the specifics of timber sports on 21 March at the Saemeister representative centre, Aardla 25, Tartu. A more detailed schedule will be announced soon.

Timber-sports competitions in 2020

The first challenge this year is the timber-sports Spring Cup, which takes place every spring during Maamess in Tartu. It is precisely for this competition that preparations are made on the training day at Saemeister. The competitions are certainly one important part of Maamess, and year by year the audience share has grown. It has also become customary for the competitions to be international; our close neighbours from Latvia, Lithuania and Finland always take part, as well as more distant ones from Belarus and Sweden.

This year the Spring Cup takes place for the 27th time. For spectators, tree felling is certainly exciting, where you can watch the real felling of a 12-metre tree and hitting a target with it. This will not be seen on the training day, but an exciting limbing competition will be.

The Estonian Championships 2020 take place this year in Tartu together with the top motorsport event Rally Estonia. TOP 10 takes place at Salla Kuursaal. The aim of this is a broader introduction to forestry and vocational education. On the one hand it is everyday forestry work, but on the other hand it is a sport, and sport is a show. This is what interests spectators most. Both competitions are international and have many participants; the best of Estonia and neighbouring countries are present.

World championships are also held in timber sports. These take place every two years, and so the competition cycle, i.e. the World Championship qualifying cycle, is also two years long. A team consists of four members, three adults and one junior. The three best adults and one best junior can represent Estonia at the World Championships. The ranking is compiled from the results of competitions held during the qualifying cycle. Medals of every colour have been brought back from the World Championships – Estonian sawmen are among the best in the world! In 2020 the timber-sports World Championships take place in Serbia.
