Cordless lawn mower, petrol lawn mower or electric lawn mower
A cordless lawn mower is quiet, starts at the push of a button and doesn't need fuel or oil changes. EGO Power+ 56V cordless lawn mowers are extremely powerful and practical, and other tools in the EGO 56V battery system also work with the same battery. STIHL and STIGA cordless lawn mowers use their own manufacturer's batteries. A petrol lawn mower suits a large lawn and long working days, since the tank can be refilled quickly. An electric lawn mower is an affordable choice for a small lawn near a power socket.
Should you choose a push or self-propelled lawn mower
A push lawn mower is light and more affordable. A self-propelled, or drive, lawn mower has a motor that turns the wheels, so the mower moves forward on its own and you just steer it. This makes work easier on a large lawn and on slopes. EGO's self-propelled models have SP in their name.
Collect the grass in a box or mulch it
A mower with a grass box collects the cut grass, keeping the lawn clean. A mulching mower, such as the STIGA Multiclip, cuts the grass finely and leaves it on the lawn, where it breaks down and feeds the lawn with nutrients, so you don't need to remove the clippings. Many lawn mowers let you choose between the two.
Maintenance before and after the season
The Saemeister workshop carries out maintenance and repairs of lawn mowers, and you can also order spare parts through us. You can book pre-season maintenance as a lawn mower service package. If your petrol lawn mower won't start in spring, read the article Why a lawn mower fails to start in spring.
Robot mowers and lawn tractors
If you'd like your lawn mowed for you, take a look at robot mowers. For a large lawn area, we recommend lawn tractors.
Frequently asked questions
How wide a cutting width should you choose for a lawn mower?
The wider the cutting width, the fewer passes you need to make. For a small garden and narrow spaces, a mower with a cutting width of approx. 40 to 45 cm is suitable; for a larger lawn, 50 cm or wider.
Can a cordless lawn mower cut long grass too?
Yes. Powerful cordless lawn mowers, such as the EGO Power+ 56V models, can handle longer grass too. For very long grass, mow the first time at a higher cutting height and then lower.
What is mulching?
When mulching, the mower cuts the grass finely several times and leaves the clippings on the lawn. They break down quickly and feed the lawn with nutrients.
What to look for when choosing a lawn mower.
1. Lawn mower type
- Petrol-engine lawn mower: Suitable for larger gardens (over 500 m²) and provides high performance. These are usually more powerful, but require more maintenance and are heavier.
- Electric lawn mowers (corded): Suitable for smaller gardens (up to 300 m²). They are lighter and easy to maintain, but are limited by the cable length and the need for a constant connection.
- Cordless (battery-powered) lawn mowers: Suitable for moderate-sized gardens (300–500 m²). These are convenient and cordless, but battery life and charging time can be limiting factors.
- Robot mowers: Suitable for people who want an automated mowing solution. Ideal if you want to reduce the time spent working in the garden. These are more expensive, but reduce the workload.
2. Mowing width and height
- Mowing width: A greater mowing width (for example 40–50 cm) reduces mowing time on a large area. If you have a small garden, a narrower width (30–35 cm) is perfectly sufficient.
- Mowing-height adjustment: A good mower lets you adjust the mowing height to suit the grass growing conditions (e.g. a lower cut in summer and a higher one in winter).
3. Lawn mower capacity and power
- Petrol-engine models: Higher-powered lawn mowers (e.g. 4–6 horsepower) are suitable for larger and hard-to-reach areas.
- Electric and battery-powered models: Electric models usually have lower power, but are sufficient for small and medium-sized gardens.
4. Collection system
- Kogumispaak: Some models collect the grass clippings, which is convenient as you avoid the need to clear up the clippings later.
- Mulching: The mulching function is useful, as the cut grass is distributed evenly over the lawn surface, acting as a natural fertiliser. If the grass is dry and thin, it can be helpful for the mower to be able to mulch.
5. Manoeuvrability
- Wheels and mobility: Larger, easily-moving wheels make the lawn mower more comfortable to move over different terrain types, especially on uneven surfaces.
6. Price and warranty terms
- The price range is very wide, depending on the model's features. The price can vary from a few hundred euros to thousands, depending on the functions and quality.
- Also check the warranty terms and service options to ensure the lawn mower's longevity and quick service if problems arise.
7. Mugavusfunktsioonid
- Easily adjustable handles: Adjustable handles provide comfort for different heights and allow better control.
- Foldable construction: If storage space is limited, a foldable lawn mower can be a big advantage, as it is easier to store.
8. Noise and vibration levels
- Noise and vibration figures are given on each model's manufacturer data sheet; compare them if you mow in a residential area.
In summary, the choice of lawn mower depends on your garden size, preferences, ease of use and budget. If the garden is large, a petrol-engine model is a good choice, but for smaller gardens electric or cordless models may be suitable.
