STIHL takes great pride in its chain plant in Switzerland. By making the saws, guide bars and chains itself in its own factories, STIHL can always develop the best solutions.

All STIHL chains are tested with STIHL equipment and, most importantly, pre-stretched. This means that new chains stretch minimally or not at all on first use. Because STIHL produces all three key chainsaw components itself – the machine, the guide bar and the saw chain – perfect compatibility between these components is guaranteed. The use of the correct sharpening tools is no less important, as these too are made to suit the materials of the cutting equipment and with its sharpening recommendations in mind.

We sell chains by length – choose the right chain type and enter the length of your saw chain in drive links as the order quantity. On the guide bar shown below, for example, that is 61 drive links, a 1.3 mm gauge and a 3/8 pitch.

You can choose between a standard chain, a sharp-tooth professional chain and a carbide-tooth chain.

PMC – standard chain – with a curved cutting tooth, for the everyday user

PSC – professional chain with a chisel tooth (cuts 25% faster, but is sensitive to dirty cutting)

Carbide chain PD:

A chain with carbide teeth. It lets you cut stumps close to the ground, use it for demolishing buildings or cut other dirty wood. A carbide-tooth chain stays sharp an estimated 8 times longer than a standard chain. NB! Please note that a carbide chain is vulnerable to larger nails and stones, which can damage the chain.

The following sizes are available:

Cordless saws usually take the 1/4″ 1.1 mm PM chain. Length 56, 64 or 72 drive links.

The 12″ 3/8 1.1 44 PMC chain suits electric chainsaws. 1.1 mm means a narrower guide bar groove. Check the marking on your guide bar to confirm the gauge of your chain.

A 12″ 3/8 1.3 44 PMC chain is standard equipment on MS 170 and MS171 saws and on some electric saws. A PSC professional chain can be fitted, which then has a sharp cutting tooth and cuts 25% faster.
