You get a proper mowing result when the lawn mower blade is correctly chosen, well maintained and sharpened.
Many manufacturers recommend doing all jobs with a single blade (so-called three-in-one and four-in-one cutting systems). In reality, different blades have different properties and suit different jobs. Ideally you would have a separate discharge and collection blade (intended primarily for collecting during the fast growing season and for picking up leaves in autumn) and a mulching blade (intended for mulching the lawn).
When mulching, the finely chopped grass is pushed back down close to the grass roots, which helps retain moisture in the soil; the chopped grass decomposes and becomes a valuable organic nutrient source. The cut grass must be properly chopped and distributed: cut grass must not be left in clumps on the lawn, as this starts a decomposition process that destroys an even lawn.
Included: flap and a two-part mowing blade, plus a bolt and thrust washer for fastening the blade.
