Zero-turn-radius lawn tractors, or zero-turns
For a long time, zero-turn-radius lawn tractors were machines reserved for professional users, but that has now changed and suitable machines are also available for home users. Zero-turn machines are known for giving the user excellent manoeuvrability and major time savings.
Where does the time saving come from?
On a zero-turn-radius mower, each rear drive wheel is controlled separately. When one wheel stands still and the other moves, the machine turns around the stationary wheel without your having to swing the machine around or drive a long arc while mowing. In practice this means you lose no time turning at the end of a mowing row - you simply continue with the next straight run. That is where the time saving builds up: on an open area, mowing with a zero-turn-radius lawn tractor can take up to half the time of a conventional tractor, with the real difference usually between 30 and 50 per cent. On a plot with many obstacles, trees and flower beds the difference is more modest, around 15 to 25 per cent, because a zero-turn machine also has to slow down between obstacles.
Three ways to steer – what are they and who is each for?
Zero-turn machines can be driven in three different ways, and all three technologies are represented in Saemeister's range.
The classic solution is two control levers, in use for example on EGO ZT4201E-L and ZT5201E-L models. Each lever controls one rear wheel, which makes speed and direction control very intuitive. An experienced user gets the most precise result with the levers, but getting used to the movements takes a little time at first – the machine may not feel natural to a beginner straight away.
If a lever-steered machine is not for you, the answer is EGO ZT4201E-S, which has an e-STEER steering wheel instead of control levers. The machine drives like an ordinary car yet still turns on its own axis – you sit down and can start mowing straight away without having to unlearn car-driving logic. It is a good choice for those who want zero-turn speed but do not want to spend time getting used to a lever-steered machine.
The third path is the STIGA GYRO series eMotion control, where a single joystick controls both direction and speed at once. This machine turns 360 degrees around its own axis and has a low centre of gravity, which keeps the ride stable even at higher speeds. The joystick suits those who prefer one-handed control and want a machine that responds to even the smallest movement.
Battery or petrol?
The battery side of the range is represented by the EGO Z6 series and STIGA GYRO, and on the petrol side Simplicity and FERRIS. EGO Z6 machines run on a 56-volt system and hold up to six batteries at once, reach a top speed of 12.8 km/h, with performance comparable to a 22 hp petrol engine. Mowing with six batteries, the mowing area can reach up to 10,000 square metres. STIGA GYRO's run time ranges from 80 to 110 minutes depending on the battery and covers 5,000 to 8,000 square metres, with fast-charger charging taking 3 to 3.5 hours.
For larger areas and professional use, a Simplicity or FERRIS petrol model is also a good choice, where working time is limited only by the fuel tank and refuelling is quicker than charging batteries – that matters when the mowing area exceeds a couple of hectares or the machine is used professionally every day. On the other hand, in everyday use the difference is easy to hear: the measured noise level at the driver's seat is 60 to 80 decibels for a battery mower and 90 to 100 for a petrol engine. This means you can mow with a battery machine early in the morning or late in the evening without disturbing the neighbours, which is a real advantage in summer heat. Maintenance also differs: a battery machine has no oil, spark plugs, filters or carburettor to look after, while petrol models need regular servicing like any combustion-engine machine.

Who might a zero-turn not suit?
A zero-turn is a good investment for an open, mostly level plot of at least 0.3 to 0.5 hectares with plenty of open mowing area. On a smaller lawn the machine simply will not pay for itself – a robotic mower is a better fit there.
On a property with many slopes, where inclines exceed 15 degrees, a zero-turn mower may also not be the best choice, since drive and braking are performed via the rear wheels. On such a plot, it is safer to choose a conventional tractor or a four-wheel-drive machine. From Saemeister's range, for example, well suited are EGO TR4201E or STIGA Tornado 5108e – they have a greater stability margin and better grip on slopes. Always mow across a slope, not up and down – mowing across keeps the machine's centre of gravity more stable. Start mowing a slope from the bottom and turn towards the hill at the end of each pass, not downhill. In wet grass, mowing on a slope should be avoided, as moisture sharply reduces wheel grip and the machine may lose control.

If you plan to push snow with the machine, bear in mind that a zero-turn is built first and foremost for mowing. In that case a conventional lawn tractor, which takes attachments better, is the better choice.
