EGO AURA-R2 wire-free robot mowers: what they can do and how to install them for a perfect result.

If you want to buy a robot mower but don't want a boundary wire in your garden, the EGO AURA-R2 series was designed for exactly that. The mowing area boundaries are set virtually in the app after the robot first traces the edge of the area, and they can later be quickly changed if a new flower bed, play area or other obstacle appears in the garden. The AURA-R2 mows systematically and plans its routes so that overlap between mowing paths is minimal and the result stays even.

At the heart of AURA-R2's navigation is PATH IQ™, which combines satellite positioning RTK (Real-Time Kinematic) accuracy correction with camera-based mapping and motion sensors. This means the robot knows its location to centimetre accuracy, sees its surroundings with cameras, learns the layout of your garden and continuously corrects its movement. It also detects typical obstacles (such as toys and tools) and maintains its path even in tight spaces.

Model range

The choice of models is simple: the RMR1500E is designed for gardens up to 1,500 m² and supports up to 20 separate mowing zones; the RMR3000E covers up to 3,000 m²; the RMR6000E covers up to 6,000 m², where managing up to 40 mowing zones also helps. If your garden has several separate patches of lawn, it's the support for multiple mowing zones that makes everyday use convenient, since the robot can move between zones and each zone can be assigned its own mowing frequency.

The mowing features of the EGO Aura are extremely practical: a 24 cm cutting width and a 20–90 mm cutting height, adjusted electronically. Cutting is done using three pivoting blades, and the maximum working slope is up to 50 percent, which is already a perfectly adequate margin for many gardens. The rainfall sensor can postpone mowing if needed, in case you don't want the robot mower operating in wet conditions. Since the Aura models have an IP66 waterproof rating, there's still no need to fear rain. The robot mower is easy to clean with water; a pressure washer can also be used when washing it, though a rotojet (rotating) nozzle should be avoided, as it may damage the device.

Smart control of the device is via the EGO Connect app, and connectivity is via Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and 4G, so you can manage schedules and zones even when you're not at home. In addition, firmware updates happen over the air, and anti-theft tracking and notifications add peace of mind.

Installation

When installing wire-free RTK solutions, the antenna's location is the most important factor. The general rule is simple: the antenna needs as clear a view of the sky as possible and should not be shaded by tall buildings or dense tree canopy. The best spot is often near the roof edge or on a separate mast. Installing the antenna is made considerably easier by being able to easily monitor signal strength as you go.

A simple rule applies to the charging station: place the station on a stable, level surface, leave the robot a comfortable path in and out, and avoid corners and spots where walls, bushes or flower bed edges would hinder manoeuvring. For RTK robots, it's also worth bearing in mind that the robot needs a satellite signal even while sitting in the station, so it's not sensible to place the station right under a roof or in a very shaded nook.

Mapping and zone setup is where the AURA-R2 really starts to shine. In the app, you can set virtual boundaries, add no-go zones, and divide the garden into zones, so that narrow passages, separate patches of lawn and different cutting heights are easy to manage.

A practical tip before creating your first map is to mow the lawn once with a regular mower and remove any loose or temporary obstacles (toys, hoses, loose branches), so that the virtual boundary isn't set based on items lying around by chance.

At the end of the season, it's worth cleaning the robot and having it checked over by professionals, since regular mowing inevitably means the blade and chassis collect dirt. The IP66 housing makes maintenance easy, but it's sensible to avoid a strong jet of water aimed very close to the seals. For winter storage, it's sensible to keep the device in a dry indoor space and follow the specific model's instructions regarding the battery and storage modes.
